Geosynthetic Clay Liner introduction

It is betonite geo-synthetic waterproofing barrier. It is self-attaching and self -sealing to concrete or other construction structures. It is made of a non-woven geotextile, a natural sodic bentonite layer, with or without a pe geomembrane layer, and a polypropylene sheet.

These layers are connected with a dense felter that makes the bentonite a self-confinement with controlled expansion. With this system it is possible to avoid slippage and the accumulation of bentonite as a consequence of cuts, tears, vertical applications and movements.

Its performance can meet or exceed GRI-GCL3 and our national standard JG/T193-2006.

Geosynthetic Clay Liner product process:

1. Material Preparation

   • Sodium bentonite (high-swelling clay) is purified and dried.

   • Geotextile layers (woven/nonwoven polypropylene or polyester) are prepared.

2. Bentonite Spreading

   • Bentonite powder (4.5–5 kg/m²) is evenly distributed between two geotextile layers.

3. Bonding Process

   • Needle-punching: Fibers are mechanically entangled to hold bentonite in place.

   • Stitching/Adhesive bonding (optional): Some GCLs use stitching or glue for extra strength.

4. Calendering (Optional)

   • Rollers compress the blanket for better density and uniformity.

5. Quality Control

   • Tests include peel strength, hydraulic conductivity, and bentonite distribution.

6. Cutting & Rolling

   • The blanket is cut to size and rolled for packaging.

GCl Geosynthetic Clay Liner Function:

The engineering function of a GCL is containment as a hydraulic barrier to water, leachate or other liquids and sometimes gases.

As such, they are used as replacements for either compacted clay liners or geomembranes, or they are used in a composite manner to augment the more traditional liner materials.

The ultimate in liner security is probably a three component composite geomembrane/geosynthetic clay liner/compacted clay liner which has seen use as a landfill liner on many occasions.
